There has been a lot of excitement lately over the announcement of Facebook’s new Lead ads. These will allow Facebook advertisers to collect emails from within a Facebook ad.

Of all the posts I have seen promoting this great new feature no one has mentioned that Twitter can already do this!

Twitter has a great feature called “Lead Generation Cards”. You can add these cards to any Tweet and they allow the user to opt in to your email list within Twitter. The cards auto populate their name, @username and email address.

You can then download users details in a CSV or have them automatically feed to your email marketing provider like Mailchimp or Infusionsoft.

This is a great way to build an email list with a simple opt in offering value. Think subscribe for 10% off, Join our mailing list for your free coupon, Join our VIP list and get advanced notice of sales, get my free e-book and many more. With so many people asking for emails these days it is important to remember the part where you provide value and don’t just throw them into your newsletter emails with no word of a thanks!

I believe the ease of optioning in will create higher opt in rates than sending someone to a sales page however the quality may not be as high.

I would suggest setting up a campaign specifically for Twitter so you can really test these leads and see the type of quality they provide for your business.

Once you have added a Lead Generation Card to a Tweet you can then go into your ads campaign and promote the Tweet to expand the reach. Experiment with a few different opt ins offerings and Tweets and once you find one that’s working well up the ad spend on that Tweet.
